Futuristic Seoul: A First-Timer’s Guide to Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and Nearby Sights

 Hi Friends! πŸ‘‹

Today I’m going to introduce DDP—Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

The photo above is from the official website. DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) is a multi‑purpose cultural space located at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station in Seoul. Since it opened on March 21, 2014, DDP has hosted all kinds of cultural events—exhibitions, fashion shows, product launches, forums, and conferences.

I’ll leave the English official website address up there, too. DDP is a spaceship‑like building designed by the world‑renowned architect Zaha Hadid. At first, some Seoul residents felt it looked a bit alien—like a UFO—and criticized the unfamiliar shape. But now it’s become one of Seoul’s signature attractions, drawing over 30,000 visitors a day. 😍😍😍

If you look at the map, you’ll see a museum, an art hall, and spots that sell design goods. Fashion brands often hold runway shows here, too. I once visited when there was an exhibition of Korean treasures.

That exhibition above is scheduled to run until March—just FYI! Since there are different events each season, it’s a good idea to check the official website in advance. Of course, the permanent exhibits and the design shops are fun to visit anytime, too. 😊😊😊

Honestly, Dongdaemun is one of Seoul’s old Four Great Gates—these days, only the restored structure remains. A single historic site might not feel super exciting on its own, but the surrounding buildings sell affordable, decent-quality fashion and stay open late. So after you visit DDP, I’d definitely recommend doing some shopping nearby.

This photo is also from the official website. Right in front of Dongdaemun and DDP, there’s a five‑star hotel—JW Marriott. The Marriott hotels in Gangnam can be really pricey, but this one offers great service at a more reasonable rate. Sometimes when I’m craving a hotel buffet, I’ll come here on purpose. It’s a super convenient base for sightseeing around Dongdaemun. 😘😘😘

It used to feel like a strange, unfamiliar building, but DDP has become one of Seoul’s signature attractions. If you’re in Korea, why not check it out at least once?
