Suwon Hwaseong Fortress: A UNESCO World Heritage Gem in South Korea

 Hi, Friends!๐Ÿ‘‹

Today I want to tell you about Suwon Hwaseong Fortress that I visited recently.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796 during the reign of King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty. The fortress holds deep personal significance—King Jeongjo constructed it to honor his father, Crown Prince Sado, who tragically died after being locked in a rice chest by his own father, King Yeongjo. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

But Hwaseong wasn't just built for memorial purposes. King Jeongjo had ambitious plans to make Suwon a new political and economic hub, potentially even moving the capital there. The fortress was designed to protect the city while showcasing the most advanced military architecture of its time.

What makes Hwaseong truly special is its innovative design. The project was led by Jeong Yak-yong, one of Korea's greatest scholars, who incorporated both Eastern and Western architectural techniques. The fortress features scientific construction methods, including the use of cranes and pulleys—pretty cutting-edge for the 18th century!

The fortress stretches about 5.7 kilometers and includes various defensive structures like gates, watchtowers, command posts, and artillery positions. Despite suffering damage during the Korean War, it was carefully restored and earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997, recognized as an outstanding example of early modern military architecture.

Suwon Hwaseong itself is huge, so I only visited Hwaseong Haengung Palace and Hwaryeongjeon Shrine. This route takes about an hour, and the admission fee is 2,000 KRW for adults. Oh, and the last Wednesday of every month is designated as Culture Day, so you can visit for free! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

I visited during the day with my family, but if you want to experience a special atmosphere, I'd recommend checking out the night opening. From May 1st to November 1st, you can visit at night 18:00 ~ 21:00 pm every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and on public holidays. I grabbed the photos of the serene nighttime atmosphere from the official Suwon Hwaseong Tourism website.

There are special performances during the day too, like traditional martial arts shows, and I found out they have special programs at night as well. On hot summer days like these, visiting during the night opening would make for some great memories. I highly recommend Suwon Hwaseong Haengung Palace where you can enjoy Korea's beautiful architecture and history together. ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—
